Memphis, TN/July 25-27, 2003 -- When a Memphis furniture dealer launches his office moving service in early 2004 he will not only enjoy a stable full of ready customers, but will open the doors as a Certified Mover.

Larry Walker, president and CEO of Office Scapes, Inc. (OSI), decided to diversify into office moving after repeated requests from satisfied customers of his Haworth Preferred and SMED office furniture dealership.

The goal? Walker intends for OSI to become uniquely known for solving their customers' worst nightmares. Office moving is a natural addition to OSI’s core business since Walker already owns trucks and employs furniture-oriented labor. All OSI needed was the knowledge and skill to do it right.

To preserve OSI’s stellar reputation with furniture buyers, Walker contacted the International Office Moving Institute (IOMI) and made sure his team soaked up every drop of know-how available on their way to earning certified-mover status.

According to Walker, the company received more than office moving training.

"A lot of what we learned . . . will help us tremendously in our installation business, too," Walker said.

Ed Katz, instructor during OSI’s three-day mover training, sees a great opportunity for the company’s new business to grow quickly.

“Memphis, as with other small cities where household movers dominate the industry, is begging for more consistent and reliable service. OSI furniture customers complain that their movers don't always finish on time for the price quoted, and that damage to furniture, computers, and office space is a common occurrence,” said Katz.

OSI will also introduce Memphis to the highly specialized devices from Office Moving Systems, Inc. including Comp-U-Wraps®, the Mat-A-Door®, and the “boxless” move combo of the Spider Crane and Space Gobblers™.

During a planning session, the Walkers, Eric, Todd, and Larry, are joined by Project Manager Greg Hurtt.

OSI offers project management, space planning, installation, asset management, furniture cleaning and refurbishing, plus new furniture sales of Haworth and SMED, their two major brands.

Todd, the second generation of Walkers in the office furniture business and an OSI senior account executive, will run the new moving division and report directly to dad. Todd believes the ingenuous combination of specialized products, methods, and training will more than set OSI apart in the Memphis market.

"With our “boxless” move and the office building protection techniques that we learned, we're going to have an unfair advantage when we compete against the movers in our market. The way that we see it is that once again, we'll have a chance to become our customers' hero--just as we did when we started Office Scapes seven years ago," said Todd.

David Moncrief, OSI senior project manager and a key player along with Todd Walker in the new division, sees office moving as ideal diversification for the furniture dealership.

"I never realized how much opportunity there is for us in the moving business. We're grateful that our customers put us onto it. And as far as we're concerned, it's a perfect fit for our present business model--same customers and same buildings," said Moncrief.

Larry Walker, second from right, wanted IOMI training by Ed Katz, far right, for his employees before entering the Memphis moving market. Office Scapes, Inc. became the first IOMI® Certified Office Mover® to earn the designation before beginning to offer the service.

"Going through the International Office Moving course gave us an edge on how to be successful in the relocation business. We like to think this course gave us an unfair advantage over the competition in many ways. We highly recommend it to any furniture dealership looking to generate greater value to their customer while increasing company profitabiltiy."

"As a dealer principal we were seeking additional revenue streams in the service sector. Ed Katz's expertise, training support and concepts have allowed us to enter the moving/relocation arena with instant credibility and capabilities. This program, in our opinion, is a must for any furniture dealer who is seeking the best methodology and path for success."
