The International Office Moving Institute (IOMI) is not an alliance, a trade association, or a moving company, but an independent, unbiased office moving resource and training organization beholden to no one. We accept no advertising. The links from within our pages to other web sites are reciprocal.

For more than a decade, many in the moving industry and companies planning a move have come to rely on officemoves.com as a steadfast source of best practices. We advocate, and through the International Office Moving Institute (IOMI), teach:

Minimizing the risk of damage to walls, floors, doors and elevators during your move. IOMI Certified Movers and Certified Project Managers® learn the best practice methods for installing extensive building protection.

Minimizing the risk of damage to furniture and computers during your move. IOMI Certified Movers and Certified Project Managers® learn the best-practice methods for wrapping every monitor, printer, CPU, server, and copier with two layers of anti-static bubble wrap (with the bubbles facing the bubbles) instead of pad-wrapping computers with filthy furniture pads.

Timing is of the essence on your office move. If your mover doesn’t finish the job on time, it can cost your company thousands of dollars of nonproductive downtime. IOMI Certified Movers and Certified Project Managers® learn an estimating formula that’s based upon man-hours instead of the unreliable method typically used on household moves that's based on weight.

The IOMI proprietary estimating formula is uncannily accurate because it factors in not only volume but the unique logistics of both the building you're moving from and to.

How can you verify a prospective mover or project manager is IOMI-certified?

If they can't produce credentials, check our list by clicking the appropriate orange or green button below. If they aren't on our list, they aren't an IOMI-trained Certified Mover or Certified Project Manager®.
MILPITAS, CA OCT 15-17, 2005
While running Trammell Crow's Relocation Services division for the entire country, John Burton recognized the need for an office moving company that consistently provided excellent service, had uniform standards and techniques, and offered commercial moving in every major U.S. market.

He identified only one company with a national presence that wasn't a van line agent; that was Graebel.

At Trammell Crow Burton represented companies that were moving. He experienced first hand the shabby service dished out by office movers who over-promised and under-served.

He and his customers suffered the one-two punch of jobs not finishing on time for the price quoted combined with trashed furniture, computers and office space.

He went looking for a solution and in 2003, earned his Certified Project Manager® certificate from the International Office Moving Institute (IOMI). The training gave Burton the leverage to control the service moving companies provided his customers.

Last May, when Graebel needed a GM for their Silicon Valley branch, Burton became the perfect candidate. IOMI training and his tremendous experience in relocation services made Burton uniquely qualified to run Graebel's San Jose branch, a major office moving player in northern California.

Burton is determined to make a difference. In only five short months with Graebel, he's making fast gains in achieving his goals. His latest step is IOMI training for everyone at his branch directly and indirectly involved in office moving. His employees and his branch are now Certified Office Movers.

During the classroom portion of Graebel's three-day IOMI training, Ed Katz teaches how to develop and prepare a detailed scope of services, which identifies responsibilities for both Graebel and their customer. Sales can then easily be converted to operations without the sales person having to run the job. Instead, a trained, professional supervisor and/or project manager delivers excellent service - consistent and uniform - simply by following the sales person's scope of services.

Graebel employees Kelly Pasley, customer service and account manager, left, and Eric Nelson, account manager, during classroom training.
Katz shows Supervisor Jose Martinez the benefits of wrapping computers with bubble wrap and the dangers of pad wrapping.

Some of the 27 Graebel employees to graduate and receive diplomas from IOMI's Certified Office Moving Training for Moving Companies. At Graebel's huge Milpitas, CA training facility, all sales, admin, supervisors, operations manager, crew chiefs, project managers and foremen as well as their branch manager attended the three-day seminar.

Graebel's sales force and project managers learn to measure the distance between office space and truck so they can deliver accurate estimates based upon man-hours instead of traditional household weight guesstimate.
Katz demonstates his techniques using miniature office furniture in a classroom setting.
Transferring what they've learned from miniature office furniture in the classroom, Grabel employees practice dollying up vertical file cabinets using the "shotgun method."
Employees take turns operating one of Graebel's several Spider Cranes® to lift a fully-loaded lateral file cabinet.

Graebel employees gather in close to hear Ed Katz, center, head of the International Office Moving Institute, and inventor of the Spider Crane®, a device that eliminates having to unload lateral file cabinets before they can be moved.

Irwin Burnette inflates a Graebel Space Gobbler™ to immobilize desk drawer contents.  Graebel is the only mover in northern California that relieves customers of the drudgery of packing and unpacking their desks and flat files by moving them with the contents still inside.
After crew training in how to wrap sensitive electronics, dolly verticle cabinets, move fully-loaded lateral files, and prepare desks to be moved with the contents still inside, Katz uses miniature office furniture to demostrate the most efficient method of loading a moving van.
Supervisor Zeke Bobadilla heads to a job with one of Graebel's several sets of Mat-A-Doors®. Customers, building managers, and Graebel employees love The Mat-A-Door® for the protection they provide entryway and office doors and lobby-side elevator entrances.

Brian Chapin and Efren Barreras first learn to attach The Mat-A-Door® to glass entrance doors then discover their claims-reducing power to protect building surfaces from accidental bumps and bangs.

Katz and Burton look over the latest edition of Move Your Business (Without Becoming A Moving Target). Katz authored the book to help businesses planning a move.

Why hire an IOMI Certified Office Mover?

1. On time for the price quoted

One of the biggest complaints about movers is that they often badly underestimate the cost of a move and then don't finish on time. An International Office Moving Institute (IOMI)-trained mover learns a formula for accurately estimating cost. By calculating the number of trucks and movers for how long, IOMI Certified Office Movers can base estimates on man-hours, volume, and logistics, and not weight, which household movers typically use when quoting an office move. As a result, the chances of a move completing on time for the price quoted is greatly improved.

2. Minimize risk of damage

IOMI Certified Office Movers learn the latest techniques to minimize risk of damage to furniture and computers, and are trained in extensive building protection to minimize risk of damage to carpet, walls, doors, and door jambs.

3. Minimize downtime

There is a better way! IOMI Certified Office Movers understand that their customers can't afford to shut down operations during a move, and are trained in techniques to keep client employees working. Many IOMI graduates offer the "Boxless" move -- moving the contents in the furniture instead of the contents and the furniture.
